Colombo is the capital city of Sri Lanka that offers many sites to visit, many things to do and many dishes to taste. The first thing that one could do in Colombo is to take a Tuk Tuk and go around the city in the local style. This does not only show places that you would want to visit but also gives one a different perspective and makes them feel like they’re more than just a cliché tourist.

The National Museum was built in 1876 and visiting it is a must as it would tell you about the ancient history of the country. Surf your tensions away

Do not worry if you have never surfed in your life. There’s always a first time. Sri Lanka is known for offering all kinds of surfing. The beaches accommodate a beginner surfer who would learn by standing on small waves as well as an expert surfer who would surf the highest waves. Hikkaduwa, Arugam Bay, and Unawatuna are the most famous and known places to surf.

Rock it at the Elephant Rock Point

The Elephant Rock Point is located south of Arugam Bay. It is an isolated beach where you might be lucky enough to spot Elephants roaming around at dusk and dawn which makes it one of the best places to enjoy the sunrise and sunset. To get the best viewpoint of the beach, one would have to climb up the Elephant rock which is absolutely worth it as the site will not disappoint you.

Festivals

Vesak Poya

Vesak Poya is the festival of lights. This Buddhist festival is celebrated on the full moon day in March which makes it the first full moon of the Buddhist New Year which is the same day Buddha was born, found enlightenment and passed away. It is celebrated by worshiping at the temple, lighting up lanterns at homes and shops and offering food and drinks to passers-by on the streets.

Maha Shivratri

The festival of Shiva is celebrated by the devotees who bathe at dawn for purification and also fast all day. You can hear the chants of “Om Nama Shivaya” in the temples where Shiva statues are covered with red vermillion after being bathed with honey and milk for purification. It is one of the best festivals to attend as a tourist and enjoy the music and dance performances that are part of the celebration.
